Gitex 2008: Day 3 highlights

The on-going Gitex Technology Week 2008 at the Dubai World Trade Center has been strongly catering to the young and technology savvy from teen fashion icons to performance-obsessed geeks.

The halls have been fully packed with professionals from business, information technology and telecommunication sectors, although the consumer electronics hall was the one which caught maximum attention.

The Touchmate laptops were one of the most admired. According to representatives, the computers included the world’s fastest processor, Intel’s Core 2 Extreme. These fashionable laptops feature Swarovski crystals embedded in many designs, intended to merge fashion with technology. The laptops are available in hot pink, white, black, and Ferrari yellow colors.

Touchmate also displayed the world’s smallest computer with a seven-inch screen, known as a ‘tablet computer’. It is found to be helpful for students and travellers, and includes a camera, Bluetooth, GPS, Wi-Fi, and is less than 1 kg in weight.

Another note-worthy gadget was a range of solar-powered multi-battery chargers displayed by a Taiwanese-based company, Onlink. They are handy, compact and aesthetically pleasing. These products come attached to briefcases, pouches and even wallets. On bringing them under the sun for a couple of hours, you get to enjoy four hours of talk time on your mobile phone. So the user will no longer have to face situations such as crucial conversations being cut short due to lack of charge on phone.

A useful application on the display, was the ‘Ketab’, targeted at children in the age-group 4 to 12. This product, available in both English and Arabic versions is a package comprising a range of diskettes and books, along with a mini computer and attached sensor. On pointing the sensor to the book, the computer utters it perfectly. It also helps adults learn a new language, serving as a learning device.

Other major attractions were Samsung’s latest mp3 player ‘Pebble’ and iRiver’s M Player. The Pebble is a tiny light-weighted circular object with a capacity to store upto 500 songs and comes in 1gb/2gb varieties in vibrant colors. The M Player ‘Mickey Mania’ by iRiver is priced at just Dh.159, and takes after the cartoon icon Mickey Mouse, offering 1gb space, and is a pleasure for cartoon fans.

A Dubai-based company was seen sporting CDs in various customized shapes, such as hearts, flowers, or even t-shirts, adding the much-required flair to the device.

Another interesting aspect for golf-enthusiasts was unveiled by a Korean company, with their World Screen Golf, which includes an elaborate screen, clubs and more. The system enables to experience true golfing from the comfort of your home or office. So when the temperature outside is not a prime golfing weather, it allows you to satisfy your urge to still play Golf offering a capacity to accommodate up to six players, and promises 99.8 accuracy.

More new products with interesting features are expected to be launched during the coming days at Gitex 2008.
