Ferry Dubai may be a popular alternative mode of transportation
Ferries sailing across the Dubai Creek will soon prove to be an alternative mode of transportation, aimed to solve the traffic congestion on the city roads.
The Ferry Dubai concept has already received the endorsement of H H Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice-President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The project will have an expenditure of Dh.178mn. Each ferry would be designed such that each will have the capacity to carry 100 passengers.
According to Mattar Al Tayer, the Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of RTA, the project is a part of the master study and plan developed by the RTA for developing the marine transport in the emirate.
The project aims to meet the requirements and aspirations of a new segment of the community and cover untapped areas in marine transport, said Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of Board and Executive Director of RTA.
“The cost will be reasonable, as we intend to motivate the public to use this mode of transportation,” he added. The RTA plans to launch ten ferries, during the first phase of the project, covering four main stations – the Union Square, Gold Souk, Al Ghubaiba and City Center.
In the second phase, ferry services would be launched in Dubai Creek extensions when the new bridges are in place. During the subsequent phases of the project, a link would be provided to interconnect the Sharjah emirate, Dubai Maritime City, The World, The Waterfront and The Palm Islands.
The project will be complete towards June 2010, and is likely to carry about 3million passengers in its first year of operation. Six out of ten ferries being planned for service would be ready by October 2009, while the other four would be ready by March 2010.
