Dubai enters final phase of construction of Maritime City
Dubai is just a step away from its ambition of growing to be a shipping services industry hub, with the work entering the final phase on Dubai Maritime City (DMC), an exclusive maritime activity zone.
Developed over an area of 227 hectares, close to Port Rashid, DMC will have shipbuilding and repair facilities, offices and trading areas for maritime companies.
According to a senior DMC official, the work is ahead of schedule, and has entered the final phase of construction. The six-lane causeway, which connects the project to Dubai City, is complete, while the industrial area is almost 50 percent complete and operational. Currently basic infrastructure facilities, electricity, water and telecommunication networks are being built.
With further progress in project, it is clear that the most important maritime development in the region has the potential to transform Dubai to the topmost maritime clusters in the world, says the CEO of DMC, Amer Ali.
The DMC companies will have special jurisdiction, which is separate from Laws of UAE and Dubai. Recently DMC has entered into a number of projects, including the first National Maritime Museum in the UAE.
Recently, an agreement has also been signed with the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU) to construct the Maritime Education University in the same area.
