Dubai has won its first Sustainable Environment and City Beautification award by the Organisation of Islamic Cities and Capitals (OICC), in Turkey yesterday.
The award was handed over during the inauguration of 11th OICC Conference in Ankara. The Session was chaired by Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General of Dubai Municipality, during the first session. The awards given were for the two projects 'Administrative methods in environment and sustainable development in Dubai' and 'Plantation and Beautification in Dubai'.
Dubai is one among the few cities in the world that spends billions on beautification of sustainable development. As of now, only 3.7 percent of the city are referred to as green areas, but as a part of an ambitious project, Dubai plans to covert eight percent of its land area into greenery by the year 2020.
The emirate's total green area during 2005 comprises 67 beaches, public parks and community areas, measuring 592.4 hectares. Dubai Municipality plans another 56 landscaping projects for the current year.
The 56 projects comprises seven community areas, five public parks, fifteen city beautification drives, thirteen child play areas and four nurseries.
