UAE to witness the first green community in the world

The first carbon-free city in the world is likely to come up in the UAE. Masdar, the green development, is expected to display to the public, the methods that could be adopted to prevent pollution, and for recycling its own waste and producing energy.

The plan, which was launched at the Cityscape Abu Dhabi exhibition, will come up at the heart of Abu Dhabi, located between the Zayed city and the Corniche.

The first phase will have the global headquarters of Masdar, and a university. On completion of all the four phases by the year 2017, the community would have spread over an area of six million Sq. Mts., and will be home to 100,000 residents.

Masdar, which means ‘the source’ in Arabic, was launched last year by the Government of Abu Dhabi, for development of new energy technologies. The CEO Al Jaber, mentioned that each home will be fitted with energy saving devices, and within the walled city, the residents will use only zero-emission public transport. All residents will be required to park their cars outside the city, and electric vehicles and railway system will serve the population.

Property Development Director, Khaled Awad, states that the aim of the plan is to demonstrate the way in which sustainable developments can be designed and implemented, and adds that he is of the opinion that some day all cities would be built in a similar manner.

The key feature of the Masdar, will be the production of energy from waste through use of solar panels, converting sun light into electricity. A desalination plant, tree-planting programme, a wind farm and a sewage plant will also serve the residents outside the city zone.

Cityscape Abu Dhabi, the three day event with more than 200 exhibitors from fifty countries, is displaying projects worth more than Dh.1400 billion.
