Dubai International Airport to be busiest in 2014
The current expansion at the Dubai International Airport will make it the worlds busiest airport by the year 2014, said Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the Chairman of Emirates Airline.
The traffic at the Dubai International Airport has crossed 57.7 million in 2012, and the airline plans to accommodate all A380s, as Emirates currently has nearly 90 double-decker A380s on order, al Maktoum said.
Dubai had opened a dedicated facility for aircraft early this year. The annual traffic report by Dubai International showed that 57.6mn passengers passed through the hub last year, marking 13.2 percent increase in comparison to 2011. The statistics revealed that this made Dubai the world’s third busiest airport, surpassing Hong Kong International Airport.
The officials at the Dubai International Airport earlier said that it was ready to overtake London Heathrow, the world’s busiest airport by 2014. Heathrow is nearing its capacity of 68mn passengers a year, while Dubai International is likely to accommodate 90million people a year by the year 2018, due to expansion work.
Dubai has grown at a rapid pace, rising from 99th largest international airport only 11 years ago.
The world’s largest A380 facility opened at Terminal 3 of Dubai International in early January, while the freight capacity of the airport is to be expanded by 25 percent, touching 1.5 million tonnes by 2018.
