According to a new initiative by Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), beginning 15th September, the bus, taxi and truck drivers are required to produce medical permits to drive, and they have to be renewed annually. This is aimed at improving road safety.
The initiative also forms part of a federal law, which is being implemented in Dubai in various phases. The driving licenses of truck drivers will not be renewed without a medical permit from 15th September, and the permits have to be renewed annually.
During the first phase, the RTA made medical permits mandatory for new driving license applicants seeking to work as professional or commercial drivers. In its next phase, beginning mid-October, the RTA plans to make it mandatory for all bus and taxi drivers before they renew their licenses.
The CEO of RTA Licensing Agency, Ahmad, said that already medical tests are being carried on for all professional drivers seeking fresh driverís license. Now, in the next phase from 15th September, all truck drivers are required to pass the medical fitness test before they renew their driverís license.
Since May, commercial drivers learning to drive wererequired to undergo medical test at one of the seven authorized medical centres. The medical permits are issued by the seven authorized centres, wherein doctors conduct special tests and candidates with certain types of diabetes, heart disease and blood pressure, sudden seizures, may not get permits.
The medical tests are authorized by Dubai Health Authority (DHA), conducted at Prime Health Care Centre, DHA Clinics, Aster Medical Centres, Zulekha Hospital, Canadian Hospital, Iranian Hospital, and Gulf Health Care Centre.
The law includes all categories of drivers including bus drivers, heavy vehicle and pick-up drivers, chauffeurs and domestic drivers and taxi and limousine drivers. All Dubai residents whose visa categorizes them as drivers are covered under this law and need to take these mandatory medical tests before seeking new license or renewing their licence.
