New zoo project planned for Dubai
Dubai will be home to a new zoo, shortly, the Dubai Municipality has announced.
Work has commenced on a new zoo project, to be built within the emirate, wherein, the existing animals will be shifted to the new zoo. The location and area of the project will be chosen, after studying the details.
The Director General of Dubai Municipality, Hussain Nasser Lootah, mentioned that a consultant and action team will come up with the final concept of the project, including choosing a suitable site, required area, and distribution of animals, in-line with international standards. The study will be completed within two months time.
Further, Lootah said that taking into consideration, the area constraints, the Municipality plans to adopt the cage system. Cages will be arranged and distributed based on category and type of animals, birds and such other species. Also, a team of veterinarians, specialists, animal curators and qualified cadres for animal welfare will be available at the site.
The Dubai Zoo, established by Shaikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum in 1967, is one of the oldest in the Gulf, and its management has been taken over by the Dubai Municipality during the 1970s.
The Zoo houses nearly 200 or more animal species, including the rarest ones and attracts nearly 340,000 visitors a year. However, as it has been facing scarcity of space, plans for a new zoo were being talked about for some time now.
