New Dubai Mall - Metro Link launched in Dubai
A project to build an 820-metre-long pedestrian walkway connecting Burj Khalifa-The Dubai Mall to nearby metro station is being launched in Dubai. The link, which is hoped to be operational by 2013, named as The Dubai Mall Metro Link, will be one of the longest pedestrian walkways to connect Dubai Metro with any retail development. The link will be of considerable help to visitors of the mall and the Burj Khalifa. It will also reduce the traffic congestion in the immediate vicinity of the mall, located at the heart of Downtown in Dubai.
Constructed by Dutco, the Dubai Mall Metro Link will have five travelators in each direction. There will be a central walkway to offer additional space for pedestrian use. The travelators will move at an average speed of 0.5 metres/second from the Burj Khalifa/The Dubai Mall Metro Station entrance pod and travels through the Downtown Dubai development, before entering into The Dubai Mall.
The Dubai Mall Metro Link will be an air-conditioned passage with allowances also made for future connections to Emaar Square and Boulevard Plaza offices and linkages with Emaar Boulevard, which hosts several lifestyle events, including the popular Emirates Classic Car Festivals.
The Dubai Mall Metro Link is open to pedestrians even if they are not Metro passengers. The link is designed elegantly in glass, so as to offer excellent views of Downtown Dubai Development, including the Burj Khalifa. The pedestrian link will open new marketing avenues for multimedia displays along its walls. Being designed with highest safety features, the Dubai Metro Mall Link will incorporate several add-on features, including exit routes along its length and access stairs.
According to Chairman of Emaar Properties, Mohamed Alabbar, The Dubai Mall is one of the busiest tourist, retail and leisure destinations in the world. The Dubai Mall Metro Link will contribute to sustainable transport initiatives developed by Dubai Government, with the travelators, developed on par with international levels, having the ability to carry more than 13,500 people per hour at its peak capacity.
