Dubai Duty Free retains its top position for second successive year
Dubai Duty Free has recorded total sales of $1.14bn in 2009 and has retained its position as the single largest airport retail operation in the world, according to an analysis report by independent industry experts Generation Research.
This is for the second consecutive year, that Dubai Duty Free has surpassed London Heathrow, which reported sales of more than $1billion, while Seoul Incheon International Airport bagged the third place. The President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and Chairman of Dubai Duty Free, Shaikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, said that given that 2009 was the most difficult year for airport retail industry across the board, and it is particularly significant that Dubai Duty Free has retained its No.1 position in terms of turnover, ahead of other single operators.
During 2009, the global recession was at its peak, and there was a 6.8percent decline in travel retail business, down to $34.5bn from $37bn in 2008. But the duty free and travel retail business in the Middle East bucked the trend and rose to $2.5bn, representing 7.2percent of global sales.
Expressing his pleasure over the retaining the No.1 position, the Managing Director of Dubai Duty Free, Colm McLoughlin, said that Dubai Duty Free is s single operator which now accounts for 3.3 percent of global duty free and travel retail sales and 5.5 percent of airport duty free business.
Dubai Duty Free is continuing to witness positive sales growth this year too, with the total sales having touched $607mn already during the first half of the year.
