Etihad, Emirates to open up 60,000 new jobs

Etihad and Emirates, the major airlines in the UAE, plan to create about 60,000 new jobs over the next decade to meet their rapid expansions, it has been announced.

The Vice President-Recruitment, Emirates, Rick Helliwell, said that the airline had recruited only 40,000 employees in 25 years, but this figure is likely to double and touch 80,000 in the next ten years.

Being the largest in the Middle East, it will require 60,000 new employees over the decade, after taking into account the current staff who would retire and move on.

Meanwhile, the Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways, which currently has 8000 employees will require an increase in staff strength by 27,000 towards the year 2020, when all its planes that have been ordered, are delivered, the airline said.

Etihad, which launched its maiden flight in November 2003, now has a fleet of 53 aircraft, serving 63 destinations. It has the largest list of orders to be delivered between 2011 and 2014.

Apart from this, are the flydubai, a sister company of Emirates and the Sharjah-based Air Arabia, both low-cost operators for the oil-rich Gulf State.

The Dubai International Airport has established itself as the busiest airport in the Middle East, handling 42mn passengers in 2009. A second Dubai Airport was opened last month, and will be confined to cargo traffic until March.
