ID cards mandatory for all traffic services in UAE
Beginning 2nd May 2010, the ID cards have been made mandatory to avail all traffic services in the UAE. The ID cards, issued by the EIDA (Emirates Identity Authority) will be made mandatory for all licensing and traffic services across the country, the officials have revealed.
A statement, issued by the Interior Ministry said that applications have been submitted to several traffic departments in the country, and these will be rejected, if the applicant does not produce an ID card.
Ever-since last November, residents of RAK, Ajman, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain, including nationals and expatriates, were required to produce the ID card for access to services such as vehicle registration and renewal.
Thereafter from 2nd May, officials are extending the decision to cover Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah.
According to Traffic Department Director at the Interior Ministry, Brig. Gaith Hassan Al Za’abi, the members of public need to register and complete the formalities for obtaining the ID cards at the earliest, to avoid inconvenience.
At the moment no stringent fines have been announced, except that residents without ID cards will be unable to avail certain government transactions. The officials are of the opinion that by denying these essential services, the residents will go ahead in obtaining the card.
As per the Law, ID cards are mandatory for all nationals and even residents of UAE over the age of 15, to identify various transactions.
However, the CEO of Licensing Agency of Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA)agrees that it is yet to receive any intimation from the Interior Ministry about considering only Emirates ID as proof of personal identity to complete any transaction.
“We will continue working as normal, and producing an Emirates ID card will be mandatory for applicants to complete their traffic, licensing and registration formalities, said the CEO.
