Employers to face prosecution for compulsory salary reductions
Sponsors and employers, if caught negotiating with their employees to reduce salaries, will be referred to public prosecution, and the files of such defaulting firms will be suspended and imposed with fines, the Labour Ministry has warned.
Recent incident of a Chinese sales executive, who was working with a kitchen design company, lodged complaint at the Open Day Committee as her sponsor threatened to terminate her service or deport her, if she did not agree to reduce her salary from Dh.2,500 to Dh.1,500.
“When asked about the reason behind the termination decision, the employer said that I could retain my job, but at a lower salary,” she said.
Jamil Qasim, Acting Director of Work Reations, said that reduction in salaries is a major violation, but, the worker can give the employer the legal right, if he agrees to that comprise as it then turns into a contract between the two parties.
He explained that in the said case, the Chinese woman can contact the electronic ‘Ratabi My Salary’ complaints system, explaining her grievance. The labour inspectors will then conduct inspection of the firm of her employer.
Yet, another option at hand is to lodge a complaint with the Works Relations Department, which would forward the case to the labour court.
