Passengers stranded in UAE not to be fined for overstay
Passengers stranded in the UAE, due to flight delays caused by the ash cloud over Europe, will not be fined for overstay, a senior immigration officer has confirmed.
The Director General of Gen. Directorate of Residency and Foreign Affairs, Maj. Gen. Mohammad Al Merri, said that the decision is not only limited to the Dubai Airports. It is applicable to all airports in the country.
This decision will remain valid until the end of this hassle, and may stay for few days, the official confirmed.
Meanwhile, the European officials said that they hoped that atleast half of the flights may resume operations today, as they aim to ease four days of airline paralysis caused by the sprawling ash cloud from an Icelandic volcano.
The closure of Europe's airspace (except for eastern and southern rims) has cost airlines and airports hundreds of millions of dollars. The closure has also left millions of passengers stranded and hurt exporters.
